Analysis of Historical Artillery Expenditures (AHART) Study - CY 87

Abstract

This study is an effort at assembling and analyzing a comprehensive data base of historical data for 20th century field artillery expenditures. The data base contains 3600 records. It is clearly cross-referenced with an annotated bibliography. Included in the technical report is a list of over 70 Department of Defense and Department of Army activities, surveyed during the research, for interest in using and maintaining such data. Once assembled the data was analyzed for its content and for its usefulness for making comparisons of historical data with combat simulation. Variables were defined with which to conduct the comparisons. Regression analysis was performed using the study variables to determine their capability for explaining the variability of historical artillery expenditures. In addition to the data base, the bibliography, and the list of relevant activities, the study provides a case study in the use of historical data to enhance the analysis of combat simulations.
