A Comparison of the Performance of Three Inventory Control Strategies in the Commissary Store Environment.

Abstract

The specific purpose of this study was to compare the performances of two alternative inventory control procedures selected from the literature with that of the strategy currently used by the Air Force Commissary Service in an attempt to answer the question: What is the most appropriate inventory of selected items in the WPAFB commissary? Due to a number of analytical and practical constraints, simulation and simulation-related techniques were used to answer this question. Extensive comparisons of the simulated performances of the three models were conducted at both the aggregate and individual item level with a sample of 90 items. Of the three procedures, the inventory control system proposed by Bytronic Technologies Corporation appeared to be the most promising at both the aggregate and individual item level. Finally, striking a delicate balance between the two conflicting objectives of providing a given level of customer service, while at the same time seeking to maintain the lowest inventory levels possible, is easier when the relationships among inventory levels, customer service, and inventory performance are explicity known. Therefore, graphs showing these actual trade-offs for the Bytronic system are presented.
