104-KM Unrepeatered Bidirectional Fiber Optic Demonstration Link.

Abstract

Experiments demonstrate that full-duplex, bidirectional data can be transmitted via optical fiber 100 km long without the use of optical repeaters. Two transmitter wavelengths were employed: 1.3 and 1.55 micron. Improvements planned for follow-on tests should extend the unrepeatered system length to 200 km. Keywords: Fiber optics, Pulse-frequency modulation, Laser diodes, Wavelength-division multiplexers, Photodiodes, and Manchester encoding.
