Deformation Ripple from the SPLAT (Spray-Lead-at-Target) Impulse Simulation Technique.

Abstract

Deformation rippling of plates and cylindrical shells loaded by the lead sprays from uniformly spaced strands of mild detonating fuse (MDF) is calculated by three methods to explore the nature of the ripple deformations and their influence on dynamic pulse buckling. The cyclic variations in loading from one strand position to the next in this spray-lead-at-target (SPLAT) impulse loading technique cause ripples in deformation by two basic mechanisms: variations in total accumulated impulse intensity from one location to another, and variations in the times at which impulse increments are delivered from one location to another.
