Static Dielectric Breakdown Strength of Condensed Heterogeneous High Explosives

Abstract

A new method of obtaining static dielectric breakdown strength data is reported. The breakdown strengths of plastic bonded explosives have been obtained using this method. The theory of dielectric breakdown in solid materials, including explosives, is presented. The difficulties associated with the measurement of dielectric breakdown strengths are then analyzed in detail, and using this analysis, a new test method is described. Keywords: Dielectric breakdown, Plastic bonded explosives, Partial discharge activity, Shielded triple junctions.
