Tactical Rubidium Frequency Standard (TRFS).

Abstract

The primary objective of this contract was to design, develop, fabricate, test and evaluate pre-production models (PPM) of a Tactical Rubidium Frequency Standard (TRFS) that will meet the tactical temperature - vibration environment specifications. Innovative design has resulted in TRFS that meets the environmental requirements as well as small size, rapid warm-up, and low power consumption. To meet the vibration specification under wide temperature variations, an SC-cut voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) having a minimum acceleration sensitivity of 4 x 10th minus 10th power/g was mounted on an internal wire-suspended vibration isolator. The VCXO output frequency of 10 MHz is tightly controlled by a servo loop with a 100 Hz bandwidth. The rubidium resonnance signal is detected by a phase-sensitive technique using sinusoidal modulation. Five multilayer PC boards are used along with discrete components. The TRFS will mount directly onto a platform without external vibration isolators. Keywords: TRFS(Tactical Rubidium Frequency Standard), Physics package, Wire-suspended isolator, VCXO, Servo loop, and Sinusoidal modulation.
