Meeting the Combat Stress Challenge: Special Psychological Intervention and Reintegration Teams (SPIRITs)

Abstract

Military medical history, at least since World War I, consistently points out that the successful management and treatment of combat-related stress disorders depends directly on timely, supportive therapy--provided as close to the battlefront as logistically possible. Regrettably, AF Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) don't have standardized wartime plans for establishing forward- based psychiatric intervention teams at the second echelon of medical care. This research project explores the need for AF medical facilities to develop a standardized operational plan that provides guidance for establishing forward- based psychiatric intervention teams. In addition, this report provides basic guidelines for developing Special Psychological Intervention and ReIntegration Teams (SPIRITs) near the wartime second echelon 2E treatment facility.
