Book Analysis: Challenger: A Major Malfunction.

Abstract

This report analyzes Challenger: A Major Malfunction by Malcolm McConnell, which covers the history of the space shuttle program from its design through the Challenger accident. McConnell attempts to show that the design of the shuttle was compromised by cost considerations, how politics influenced shuttle acquisition and operations, and how pressure to fly compromised safety. With minor exceptions, the book is a faithful account of the factors which caused the Challenger accident, and is recommended to Air Force/DOD readers.
