Target Acquisition and Analysis Training System: Evaluation of the Basic Thermal Combat Vehicle Identification (TCVI) Training Program

Abstract

Thermal (IR) sighting systems are used on a variety of weapons systems, such as the M1 Tank, the M2 and M3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle, the TOW, and the improved TOW. However, no standard training program that trained the thermal sight operator to recognize or identify the targets with these sights existed. A vehicle recognition and identification training program utilizing simulated thermal images was developed and tested. The Basic Thermal Combat Vehicle Identification (RCVI) Training Program was designed to be compatible with the Army's Combat Identification (CVI) Training Program (GTA 17-2-9), through use of the same 30 vehicles and training format. The TCVI training was evaluated in the 8th Infantry Division, Germany, where 123 soldiers were pretested, trained, and posttested. Performance was measured by the correct number of vehicle recognition and identification responses. A significant performance change was obtained when a comparison of pretest and posttest scores was made.
