Career Pilots - One Fix for the Pilot Retention Problem

Abstract

The Air Force is once again in the throes of a pilot retention problem. Previous attempts to solve the problem have not been effective in preventing its recurrence. This report examines why previous solutions have not worked as envisioned, explores the potential solutions available to the Air Force today, and recommends implementing a bonus enhanced career pilot track in addition to the current 'up or out' personnel management system as one facet of a comprehensive cure.
