Environmental Monitoring of a Titan 34D 5 1/2 Segment Solid Rocket Motor Static Firing.
Abstract
On 15 June 1987 a full-scale 5 1/2 segment Titan 34D solid rocket motor was static fired at the Air Force Astronautics Laboratory, Edwards AFB, CA. An environmental monitoring program was initiated to assure protection of test personnel and compliance with environmental restrictions. A protocol for monitoring densely populated closed environments was developed and initiated in the Control Center. Realtime monitoring of gaseous hydrogen chloride and analysis of preserved collections of hydrochloric acid depositions was performed. Revolatilization chamber experiments were performed to predict and study the strength of acidic off-gassing. Results of the program indicate that the personnel and equipment involved in the test were adequately protected and no significant environmental impact occurred as a result of the motor firing.
