Herbicide Orange Site Characterization Study Naval Construction Battalion Center

Abstract

This report contains the sampling methods, analytical procedures, and results of a 2-year study to map the horizontal and vertical extent of Herbicide Orange derived 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, and 2,3,7,8-TCDD at the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, MS. The Construction Battalion Center was used as a storage site for Herbicide Orange until 1977. The old storage site was sampled in a systematic grid pattern to produce a total site map. Surface samples were analyzed for TCDD to a detection limit of 0.1 parts per billion. Subsurface samples were also collected from areas known to be 'hot-spots.' These samples were collected from every foot to a depth of 5 feet. Samples were collected with a power auger and split spoon samplers. Subsurface samples were analyzed to 0.01 ppb for 2,3,7,8-TCDD and 0.1 ppb for 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. Keywords: Herbicide Orange, Dioxin, Soil sampling, Analytical methods, Hazardous materials.
