Should ACSC (Air Command and Staff College) Purchase a Local Area Network.

Abstract

The Air Command and Staff College has established a requirement for a Local Area Network (LAN). Is it really a good idea for ACSC to purchase a LAN? This study reviews current technology available to ACSC to accomplish electronic communications needs. It addresses LAN capabilities and limitations, and discusses integration of a LAN into the ACSC mission. Specific ACSC tasks are identified which require or would benefit from a LAN. The study concludes that ACSC should purchase a LAN. Recommendations are made concerning; (1) the network manager's role; (2) distribution of curriculum material via the Lan; (3) a standard database format for the LAN; (4) evaluation of Lan-compatible software for ACSC needs; and (5) laser printer connection to the LAN as a cost-effective method for producing publications-quality text and graphics.
