Beam Optics Test Stand.

Abstract

In this report, the design and construction of the Beam Optics Test Stand (BOTS) is presented. A variety of computer compatible diagnostics have been developed to facilitate experiments. Extensive theoretical work is presented leading to the identification of two potential methods to correct aberrations in magnetic optics: biased grid arrays and space charge corrected solenoidal lenses. A series of experiments are presented which demonstrate, for the first time, the feasibility of space charge corrected optics. Keywords: Neutral practical beam sensing; Magnetic optics; Neutral particle beam control; Particle beam aberration correction; Space charged optics; Biased grids; Beam diagnostics.
