Development and Implementation of a Comprehensive Risk Management Program at the USAF Academy Hospital, USAF Academy, Colorado

Abstract

This study was aimed at developing and implementing a Comprehensive Risk Management program to effectively reduce malpractice claims against an Air Force health care facility. The study objectives were to gather data, develop and evaluate alternative proposals and to formulate the optimal solution to meet the needs of a comprehensive risk management program. A systems approach allowed a seven phase program implementation that concluded with a built-in requirement for periodic evaluation. The major aspects in the program involved personnel education and briefings, and the development of a Hospital Regulation governing the program. The study provided the organizational components and those responsibilities to maintain an effective comprehensive risk management program in a hospital facility.
