ACCESS: A Communicating and Cooperating Expert Systems System.

Abstract

The primary focus of Phase I was to prototype a development environment, ACCESS, for A Communicating and Cooperating Expert Systems System. More generally, this work explored the question of what capabilities were needed in a development environment for embedding distributed knowledge-based systems applications on personal computer or work-station class platforms. The stated goal of the Phase I research and development effort was to investigate and implement a software environment for the realization of cooperating knowledge sources on personal computers. This system was to be Lisp based, distributed processing was to be facilitated by message passing using TCP/IP, control was to be accomplished by meta-level objects and a variety of features were to be provided to aid developers in building such systems. Underlying these goals was the assumption that the tools needed to support such an effort, mainly Common Lisp, Portable Common Loops and TCP/IP, were adequate to do so. During the course of this work Symbiotics found several short-comings in these software tools and identified a need for higher level tools to facilitate distributed processing development. This report documents that work and the results of the Phase I effort. Keywords: Parallel processing.
