Proposed Advance Measures Flood Control Project Hampton Township, Bay County, Michigan. Intensive Archaeological Survey. Volume 1,

Abstract

This survey included several portions of the approximately 7.7 mile long and 45 feet wide dike alignment proposed at the time of the survey. The proposed dike will be located along the Saginaw Bay shoreline in Hampton Township. Much of the proposed project corridor traverse a sandy ridge composed of Pipestone fine sand, probably a relict Huron basin shoreline feature. The purpose of the investigation was to identify known and potential archaeological sites or historic properties potentially affected by the proposed project and which may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Archaeological sites in the project area were visited while the survey was in progress. An important collection of archaeological material from the Jahrman Ranch site, west of the project area, was also examined. No evidence was found of archaeological material of significance, and no sites were discovered of National Register eligibility. As a result, it was recommended that archaeological clearance be given those areas where no further investigations will be required.
