2-Dimensional Axisymmetric and 3- Dimensional Finite Element Stress Analysis of the LHA-1 Class Superheater Header.

Abstract

ADINA, a finite element program for automatic dynamic incremental nonlinear analysis, is used to conduct a stress analysis of the Tarawa class (LHA-1) superheater header. This investigation is sponsored by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) as a result of cracking in the superheater header tube attachment weld. A 2-dimensional solid axisymmetric finite element model was developed using both a coarse and fine mesh. Both pressure and thermally induced stresses were studied. A 3-dimensional solid finite element model was developed and a preliminary stress analysis conducted. Theses.
