Soviet Partisan Warfare: Integral to the Whole,

Abstract

This study first establishes the theoretical and historical bases for partisan warfare in the Soviet Union. There follows a review of World War II partisan warfare with regard to its role in unbalancing the enemy's center of gravity. The study concludes with an analysis of Operation Bagration in Belorussia during the summer of 1944 and the integration of partisan and 65th Army actions during that operation. The concepts of irregular warfare being a part of the totality of warfare, of a strong control structure, and of the role of the partisans in attacking enemy vulnerabilities and critical points are developed continually in the analysis. Keywords: Irregular warfare; Unconventional warfare; Rear Area; Security dialectic.
