Abstract

In the 1970 Civil Works Omnibus Bill, Congress authorized the Corps of Engineers (COE) to prepare a plan for the removal and disposal of debris and obsolete buildings associated with world War II in the Aleutians. In August 1984, as part of the historic preservation compliance obligations relating to the COE's Defense Environmental Restoration Account (DERA), the COE entered into an agreement with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation the National Park Service, and the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office to complete a comprehensive study and plan for World War II cleanup operation in the Aleutians that would also identify for preservation and develop a preservation plan for any of the World War II remains. The report is an historic overview of World War II in the Aleutians, with descriptions of associated events (pre-World War II and the Cold War ). Volume 2 of the report is a comprehensive bibliography finding aid to major World War II documents, by topic and archival location. Keywords: Management planning and control, Resource management, Military facilities.
