Spontaneous Force Optical Traps

Abstract

Very well controlled diode laser systems are constructed and used to produce laser cooled atoms. Very low pressures are required to study very cold atoms and a high vacuum chamber is constructed to achieve the necessary pressure. The behavior of laser trapped and cooled atoms is studied and found, not to agree with present theoretical predictions.
