Preparation and Characterization of Single-Crystal RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R = Er, Ho)

Abstract

Large (1.5 mm x 1.5 mm x 0.05 mm) single crystals of RBa2Cu3O7 delta (R = Er, Ho) were grown from nonstoichiometric mixtures of BaCO3-R2O3-CuO. Crystals of ErBa2Cu3O7 delta and HoBa2Cu3O7 delta grown in alumina crucibles have small orthorhombic distortions and are superconducting with resistive Tc (onsets) = 87 K and 80 K respectively. Crystals of ErBa2Cu3O7 delta grown in ZrO2 crucibles show an onset of diamagnetism at 82 K. A number of experiments were carried out in order to optimize the crystal growth parameters. Keywords: Barium, Copper oxides.
