5ESS (Trademark) Switch Radiation Hardness Assessment Program. Volume 1. Phase 1.

Abstract

The tasks performed in this report were directed toward understanding the radiation response of the microelectronic devices used in the 5 ESS Switch. This perspective also is planned for Phase II, in addition to a study of the reduction in radiation exposure environment afforded by building structures. It is anticipated that the third and final phase will encompass the system vulnerability assessment, wherein the potential system failure modes will be identified at circuit-pack level. This assessment would be verified by the performance of a subsystem test (possible candidate subsystems are a Remote Switching Module or a 3B20D Model 3 Computer). The total ionizing dose that a typical 5ESS Switch could withstand (due to system's inherent radiation hardness) will be compared with the potential radiation environment it could be exposed to (by considering the building shielding and deployment practices) during the third phase as well. Keywords: Electromagnetic pulse, Public switched network. (PSN). (sdw)
