Relationship between the Soldier in the Military Unit and the Family

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to explore the interrelationships between the soldier's behavior within his unit and the military family's patterns of adjustment. Specifically, sources of stress within the two environments - the military unit and the family - and their impact on both parties were investigated. One hundred families (husbands and wives) of military personnel from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) comprised the sample for this study. In-depth interviews and questionaires provided the main tools for data collection. The results show that the military families experience daily military-vs.-family conflict. Some of these families manage to reconcile the competing demands of the two domains and hence 'live in peace' with the military vs. family conflict. Other families are not very effective in coping with the double sources of stress, from the military and from the family, and therefore constantly struggle with the military vs. family conflict. Various profiles of families 'living in peace' and 'living in struggle' with the military vs. family conflict, were identified. Keywords: Military family, Stress, Coping, Stress management.
