Fracture Mechanics Analysis of Some Fatigue and Fracture Test Specimens Using Finite Elements

Abstract

The NASTRAN finite element computer program was used to analyze the Model problems of a thin strip fatigue specimen with a cracked central hole in tension, and a single edge cracked specimen in tension and bending. A regular eight node isoparametric quadrilateral element was degenerated into a quarter point triangular element which approximates the stress singularity at the crack tip. Accurate values of the Model stress intensity factors were computed using this element.
