Plane Symmetry Groups

Abstract

Plane symmetry groups are a classification system for describing the symmetry of two dimensional figures and patterns. This paper presents the basic mathematical theory behind plane symmetry groups. This theory is then applied in classifying the symmetry of bounded figures, frieze patterns and wall paper patterns. Recently developed algorithms are included to help analyze complex designs. Over 100 examples are presented in the next to clarify concepts and to illustrate the various symmetry types.
