Synthesis of Graphical Displays for Tabular Data.

Abstract

This paper reports on a simple theory of graphical display that generates tabular displays for data structures based on a small number of principles using visual sameness to reflect associations among the data, optimization, and well-ordering. The theory uses ideas from automatic programming including data structure reformulation and optimization. A prototype display synthesis system which embeds the generative theory as a set of transformation rules has been written. An annotated trace of the prototype as it generates a large number of displays for an example data structure demonstrates the success of the theory. Extensions of this theory are discussed. Keywords: Generative theory; Data structure reformulation; Program optimization. (JHD)
