Cronus, a Distributed Operating System: Revised System/Subsystem Specification

Abstract

The objective of the Cronus project is to develop a testbed for evaluating distributed system technology. To do this we are establishing a prototype local area network based hardware architecture, and building an operating system and software architecture to organize and control this distributed system. The architecture was partially specified by the statement of work, and further defined during early stages of the project. In addition to establishing a system architecture, the other major aspects of the Cronus project activities are: 1) Select off-the-shelf hardware and software components as a basis for an Advanced Development Model (ADM) prototype configuration for the distributed system testbed; 2) Design the system; 3) Implement a version of the basic system components; and 4) Test and evaluate the concepts and realization of the DOS in the Advanced Development Model. Keywords: User interfaces, Systems management, System monitoring and Control.
