Analysis of the Educational Objectives in the Area of Inventory Management for Supply Corps Officers Attending the Naval Postgraduate School

Abstract

A supply corps officers' knowledge of inventory management principles serves as the keystone of his professional career development. This thesis is an analysis of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) course titled Inventory Management (MN3377) that is required to be taken by the majority of Supply Corps officers who attend NPS. The thesis traces the development of the text for the course, (Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Publication 553, Inventory Management) and of the course itself. The thesis evaluates whether the text and course are presently meeting the needs of the Navy. Based on the evaluation, a recommendation is made to revise the emphasis and content of the course. A revised course outline and learning objectives are presented. Additionally, Chapter 1 of NAVSUP Publication 533, entitled Supply Systems Overview and Basic Inventory Management Concepts , was revised and expanded, and is included as a part of this thesis.
