Toxin Production and Immunoassay Development. 1. Palytoxin

Abstract

Palytoxin is an extremely toxic non-proteinaceous toxin first isolated from marine soft corals of the genus Palythoa. It is a membrane active agent whose mechanism of action is not fully understood. Palytoxin is also a novel type of tumor promoter. Until recently, there was no specific means of detecting and quantitating palytoxin and there was no known antidote. This project was undertaken in response to the U.S. Army's need for research quantities of palytoxin and the need for a rapid, simple, and specific means to identify and quantitate palytoxin. We are utilizing derivatives of polytoxin to produce immunogens which are being used to generate anti-palytoxin polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies. These antibodies are being incorporated into enzyme linked immunosorbent assays for palytoxin. Keywords: immunoassay.
