Analysis of the Optical Spectra of Triply Ionized Transition Metal Ions in Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAG)

Abstract

An analysis of the reported spectra of five transition metal ions in yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) is given. The reported data assumed that the ions occupied the C3i site in YAG, and this was also assumed in the analysis. The point charge lattice sums, Anm, were calculated for the Cei site, and the concept of rotational invariance was used to obtain a set of crystal field parameters, Bnm, for the triply ionized edN electronic series. The energy levels for the entire (Ti3t-Zn3+) series of transition metal ions was calculated using the Bnm for the C3i site. The spin-orbit interaction was included in the calculation.
