Mechanistic Studies of Pressure-Assisted Superplasticity of Structural Ceramics

Abstract

Superplastic flow in silicon nitride ceramics containing YAG was investigated. A low flow stress was found possible when the solid SIALON grains are included in the liquid phase YAG above a critical temperature. The mechanisms of grain growth and microstructural development in silicon nitride and zirconia were studied. The effect of Manganese addition on lowering the forming temperature of zirconia was demonstrated.
