Interconnecting Different Types of Local Area Computer Networks
Abstract
When interconnecting local area computer networks of various types there are many issues which the Information Systems manager must consider. This thesis will identify some of these issues as they pertain to the interconnection of four local area computer networks. Relevant information which results from this thesis will be used to enhance this internetting. Step taken in solving the issues of interconnecting different types of LANs included the following: Through examination of existing LANs hardware and software; What fundamental requirements and objectives were to be accomplished; What were the specific hardware objectives, i.e., to be able to use a laser printer on another LAN; What were the specific software objectives, i.e., to be able to share certain application programs from a server. What protocol conversion had to be accomplished and what degree of interconnection strategy should be pursued, i.e. , full file transfer versus message passing. How friendly should the user interface be and how that impacts on performance; and Government regulations and their effect on compatibility.
