World War II in Alaska: A Historic and Resources Management Plan. Volume 2. Archival Sources: A Finding Aid
Abstract
This document constitutes a computerized bibliographic finding-aid which is a guide to the major holdings of selected institutions which house materials related to World War II in Alaska. The primary materials which are included from these depositories are extremely varied; they range from official federal correspondence (both military and civilian) through private papers and diaries, microfilmed documents, photographs, maps, and drawings. In this data base, most are described at least to the folder-title level. The sources are also extremely varied in their quality of information. They move from key documents concerned with major civilian and military activities in Alaska to day-to-day notations of personnel activities and budget records. There is, as best as can be determined, relatively little overlap in the list, even though a number of depositories which are geographically separated were investigated. A conscious attempt was made not to include information in the list which was duplicated in one of the already-investigated major collections. The finding aid can be accessed by the use of the place name index in the following section. It should be noted, however, that these key words locate for the user all references to that place without distinguishing type of document or subject. Thus, the user can determine where holding related to the place name can be found, the folder title, and in many cases, the size of the body of documents.
