Non-Chromate Surface Preparation of Aluminum

Abstract

The chromic compounds in the Forest Product Laboratories (FPL) etch solutions, used in preparing aluminum surfaces for adhesive bonding, present disposal problems. In this program, bonded aluminum samples were prepared with several surface preparation methods which did not include chromic compounds. Mechanical property tests were run to evaluate the surface preparation methods. Keywords: Surface finishing; Wedge test; Floating roller peel test; double lap shear test; Phosphoric acid anodization; Bonded joints.
