Computer Generation of Fractal Terrains

Abstract

The use of fractals for the generation of artificial terrains is presented. An introduction to the introduction to the relevant basic properties of fractals is given and a method for the generation of artificial fractal landscapes is described. The algorithm has been used to develop a LISP computer program for synthesizing topographic surfaces. Examples of the resulting structures are given in the form of a series of profiled surfaces representing landscapes of varying fractal dimension and varying vertical dilation. The LISP computer programs are also given and described. Keywords: Computer graphics.
