2H NMR Studies of Oriented Fluid Phases

Abstract

Deuterium Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) observations are presented for two kinds of liquid crystals, thermotropic dimer mesogens and lyotropic polypeptide liquid crystals. In the former intramolecular averaging within the dimer spacer chain is suggestive of translational ordering within the nematic phase which is sensitive to the dimer's terminal chain length. The averaging within the polypeptide sidechain appears to be dominated by intramolecular constraints -- dihedral angle rotations.
