Effects of Aircraft Noise and Sonic Booms on Domestic Animals and Wildlife: A Literature Synthesis
Abstract
An information base on the effects of aircraft noise and sonic booms on various animal species is necessary to assess potential impacts to wildlife populations from proposed military flight operations. Thus, in a joint U.S. Air Force/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service effort, the National Ecology Research Center conducted a literature search of information pertaining to animal hearing and the effects of aircraft noise and sonic booms on domestic animals and wildlife. Information concerning other types of noise was also gathered to supplement the lack of knowledge on the effects of aircraft noise. The literature is summarized in this report to provide an overview of current knowledge. No attempt was made to evaluate the appropriateness or adequacy or the scientific approach of each study. A brief overview of the physics of sound and aircraft noise and sonic boom characteristics also is included to familiarize the reader with terminology and concepts of aircraft noise and sonic boom impact analysis.
