Intelligence Support to the Operational Level of War

Abstract

This paper discusses the recent emphasis in the US Army and Air Force on the theory of the operational level of war and the requirement for intelligence support to operational commanders. The author comes to the conclusion that a working definition for operational intelligence is lacking. Without an adequate definition, there is confusion over what should be done to support field commanders, and unnecessary duplication of intelligence analysis and production by the military intelligence community in supporting the operational intelligence is offered and a way to overcome the duplication problem is suggested. Keywords: Problem solving, Battlefields.
