The Egyptian Air Force: Insurance for U.S. National Interest in the Middle East

Abstract

A synopsis of history making events in Egypt from the overthrow of King Farouk in 1952 until 1988. Remarks on the contrasting leadership styles of Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak. A brief history of the Egyptian Air Force as well as lessons learned from past wars. An analysis of pros and cons of being a Soviet protege and the rationale behind the switch from east to west. A comparative analysis of the Egyptian and the Israeli air forces of 1988. An assessment of Egyptian foreign policy in 1988 and as an assertion of similarities between it and U.S. national interests within the region. The author believes that by continuing to supply Egypt with vast amounts of military and economic aid, the U.S. will achieve a balance of power between Israel and the moderate Arab states, increasing regional stability and serving U.S. interests in the region.
