Specific Cardiovascular Drugs Utilized in the Critically Ill

Abstract

The ability to manipulate the function of the heart and peripheral vasculature is requisite for the management of many critically ill patients. For each clinical situation, a wide scope of cardiovascular agents is available. In this article we review the clinical indications and cardiovascular effects of catecholamines, opioid peptide antagonists, prostaglandin inhibitors, calcium, glucagon, calcium channel blockers, and other agents. We also present possible new indications for conventional drugs and discuss future research areas. Reprints.
