A Study of how to Implement Holistic Medicine in the Military Environment.

Abstract

A quiet revolution is going on in health care today that has the potential to change the face of medical care and practice all across the United States. It's called holistic medicine and involves approaches which emphasize preventive measures and encourage life-style modifications. Wellness programs emphasizing weight control, diet management, control of alcohol and smoking, physical fitness, stress reduction, and spiritual attachment are very popular. Since the military represents a cross section of society it is often reflective of trends in that society. Such is becoming the case with holistic medicine. This study examines how the military has employed holistic tenets already (with increased emphasis on physical fitness and weight standards) and recommends that the philosophy of holism be increasingly integrated with the traditional practice of medicine at Army medical treatment facilities. Keywords: Health care; Holism; Wellness; Military medicine; Medical services; Military theses. (kt/jes)
