Fractographic Analysis of a Failed Crane Bolt

Abstract

A failed crane bolt was examined by scanning electron microscopy to determine its failure mode. Failure occurred by fatigue crack initiation at the root of a thread with subsequent propagation by fatigue through essentially the entire approx. 0.7-inch diameter cross section of the bolt.
