Taxonomy and Biology of Phlebotomine Vectors of Human Disease

Abstract

A taxonomic review of the Lutzomyia sand files occurring from Mexico southwards was completed. The treatment of the 362 species and subspecies includes identification keys, distribution maps, illustrations (280 plates) and over 700 references. Seventeen new taxa are illustrated but not named. A summary of other work on the biosystematics, biology and disease relationships of Phlebotominae is given. Keywords: Sandfly fever; Viruses; Disease vectors; Diptera psychodidae.
