Assessing the Need for an Organization Structure for Quality Assurance, Womack Army Community Hospital, Fort Bragg, North Carolina

Abstract

Today, hospitals in the United States are being besieged by a societal demand for quality in the delivery of health care. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH) has a requirement for a Quality Assurance (QA) Program. Figuring out a methodology to meet this requirement is left to the individual hospitals. In 1981, when visiting Womack Army Community Hospital, the JCAH Accreditation Team found a large number of weaknesses in the existing QA program. That occurrence prompted this study which determined that a need existed for a centralized QA organization structure within a health care institution order to meet JCAH standards. A QA Department and QA Coordinator would facilitate such a centralization of hospital wide efforts.
