Study of Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract

This research studied magnetic reconnection in a laboratory setting. (Magnetic reconnection is considered to be the primary cause of substorms.) It was found possible to trigger magnetic reconnection through the ion tearing mode and associated magnetic and particle properties were studied in detail. A summary is given of the lessons learned in regard to laboratory experiments on magnetic reconnection.
