A Study of Meeting the Emotional Needs of Dying Patients and their Families at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC

Abstract

The study examines how the emotional needs of dying patients and their families are best met by the hospital staff, What is the best method for the health care professional to provide support to the terminally ill patient. Data gathered through literature reviews and personal interviews identified what emotional needs the patient required. Some alternatives discussed included a hospice program or a Care Team formulated to meet those emotional needs of the dying patient. The study presented a need for additional training of the physicians, nurses, family members and other health care members to deal with the emotional stress of the dying patient. Within current resources, the study provided a program to help the hospital staff assist the patient to die with dignity. Keywords: Health care; Emotional needs of dying patients; Military medicine.
