Digital Processing of Speckle Images

Abstract

A digital simulation of an image with speckle noise from coherent illumination was developed and verified by comparison with experimentally obtained imagery. The digital simulation was then used to obtain detection probability statistics and to evaluate the utility of several digital filtering techniques for speckle reduction. Homomorphic Wiener filtering produced the best noise reduction with the least degradation in image resolution.
