Correlation Analysis and Power-Law Profiles of LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimeter), PIBAL, and Anemometer (Tower) Wind Data in the Redstone Arsenal Boundary-Layer

Abstract

Correlation analysis of windspeed in the Redstone Arsenal, Alabama boundary-layer along with the variation of the exponent in the power-law wind profile for concurrent tower, LDV, and pibal data are presented for 36 cases between 13 January and 1 April 1986. Wind profiles were available up to 90 m, 450 m, and 915 m for the tower, LDV, and pibal data, respectively. The correlation between the scalar wind at 4 m with the scalar wind at 90 m is .84 for the tower data improving to .92 when the scalar wind at 19 m is correlated with the scalar wind at 90 m. The correlations derived from the LDV data set also showed the correlations improving as the reference point is raised, but the correlations were lower and dispersed over a wider range.
