Mathematical Description of the GPS (Global Positioning System) Multisatellite Filter/Smoother

Abstract

This report provides a detailed mathematical description of the GPS Multisatellite Filter/Smoother system of computer programs. Orbit, clock, and additional state and covariance estimates are determined simultaneously for several GPS satellites in this system. The square root information implementation of the Kalman filter/RTS smoother was adopted. Stochastic clock and orbit models are included. Smoothed range, correlated range difference, and interferometric-type derived observations based on simultaneous observations can be processed. This system of programs was designed to be used in production as well as for research into improving the GPS emphemeris and clock estimate accuracies and supporting evaluations. This system is part of a larger system of programs for orbit determination under development called OMNIS. Keywords: Global positioning system; Orbit determination; Clock modeling; Kalman filter; Square root information filter; Smoother; Square root information smoother; Estimation theory. (JHD)
